The name of this coastal area is linked to the presence of the Etruscans, who lived here as early as the 9th century BC. One of the most significant testimonies of this civilisation is undoubtedly the Baratti and Populonia Archaeological Park, which covers about 80 hectares between Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, where the Etruscan city of Populonia once resided.
